A closer look at IM Pei’s inspiration for Paris’ Lourve

IM Pei’s most high profile and controversial project was the Louvre museum renovation in the French capital Paris. In the early 80s, then French President Francois Mitterrand tapped on IM Pei directly for the job. But Mr Mitterrand’s unilateral decision angered many, especially when it meant forgoing French firms for a Chinese-American architect.

IM Pei initially kept it secret from his team in New York, while he spent the next four months studying the museum and French history before coming up with an idea for a glass pyramid.

Today it is seen as an icon alongside the Eiffel Tower, and the Arc de Triomphe.
