China seeks to create unified national park system to protect ecosystems

China’s economy has boomed over the past 40 years, but the country has expanded its priorities to include conservation of its key natural resources. It wants to create a unified national park system with clear standards for limiting development and protecting ecosystems. One of its first pilot parks will be unveiled in 2020 in Qinghai, which is home to threatened species such as the snow leopard and Chinese mountain cat. The area also encompasses the headwaters of three of Asia’s great waterways: The Yangtze, Yellow and Mekong Rivers.
