From Farmboy To Mala King

He grew up on a farm near Chongqing China, and now he’s the owner of one of Singapore’s favourite mala xiang guo chains, You Ma You La.

The chain has grown rapidly since 2015, but it wasn’t an easy start. Yang Jian had to adapt his mala to suit Singaporeans, and introduced mala mini lobsters, a dish that fired up people’s appetites for more that he had to offer.

With 14 stalls in food courts and 2 restaurants, this hawkerpreneur isn’t slowing down. He aims to start a central kitchen making mala sauce, and if given the opportunity, wants to package and sell mala in supermarkets.
 
Just like the immigrants before him who made Hainanese chicken rice a Singaporean favourite, he too is hoping to leave his own mark in Singapore’s culinary melting pot.
